Yoga for Hypertension

HYPERTENSION

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, occurs when the pressure in blood vessels exceeds normal levels (greater than 120/80 mmHg). If left untreated, hypertension can lead to serious health issues. Many individuals with high blood pressure may not experience any symptoms, making regular blood pressure management essential. Hypertension is diagnosed when the systolic blood pressure reading is ≥120 mmHg and/or the diastolic blood pressure reading is ≥80 mmHg.

The systolic number indicates the pressure in blood vessels when the heart beats, while the diastolic number reflects the pressure in the vessels when the heart is at rest.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure, including genetics, being overweight or obese (BMI > 25), lack of physical activity, a high-salt diet, excessive alcohol consumption, tobacco use, and stress.

Implementing lifestyle changes for hypertension, such as adopting a healthier diet, quitting tobacco, and increasing physical activity, can significantly help lower blood pressure. Additionally, incorporating yoga therapy and specific yoga asanas for hypertension into your routine can be beneficial.

Signs and symptoms of hypertension include:

Non-symptomatic: Often, patients do not notice any symptoms when their blood pressure rises, which is why regular BP checks are important.

Symptomatic: When symptoms do occur, they may include headache, breathlessness, dizziness, blurred vision, disturbed sleep, recurrent backache, and anxiety.
